The Academy has held a roundtable discussion to assess the effectiveness of the European Commission’s Beating Cancer Plan and identify joint recommendations on preventing skin cancer and melanoma
For the first time ever, the the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV) has brought together key stakeholders* to assess the effectiveness of the European Commission’s Beating Cancer Plan on preventing skin cancer and melanoma.
The moves comes as skin cancer remains the most common type of cancer in Europe, despite being highly preventable and treatable with early detection.
Following the publication of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan in February 2021, the European Commission demonstrated its commitment to fighting cancer at all stages of the care pathway with a EU-wide patient-centred approach.
The EADV's Spring Symposium earlier this month provided the opportunity to bring together key stakeholders to evaluate the Beating Cancer Plan, to help bridge the scientific research with the EU health policy agenda and identify joint recommendations that step-up measures towards goals on prevention and treatment of the disease.
The Beating Cancer: How to step-up EU efforts on Skin cancer prevention was the first in a series of Policy Roundtable Discussions the Academy intends to convene in order to promote a multi-stakeholder response to the Plan with a strong focus on patients.
“The EU Beating Cancer Plan recognises the burden of cancer as a key societal challenge requiring additional research. EADV believes that research into prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of skin cancers is urgently needed,' commented EADV President and Roundtable moderator Prof. Alexander Stratigos.
“We are strongly committed to working with key stakeholders to firmly position the problem within the EU health agenda and bring to the forefront important issues around our speciality. The time is now ripe for setting bold goals in the fight against cancer, tapping into the opportunities provided by research and innovation and supportive policies.”
* The following speakers took part in the first roundtable discussion: Dr Paolo Guglielmetti, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan Taskforce, DG SANTE, European Commission; MEP Alessandra Moretti, member of the ENVI Committee and the Special Committee on Beating Cancer, European Parliament; Prof. Claus Garbe, President of the European Association of Dermato Oncology (EADO); Prof. Marie-Aleth Richard, Member of the EADV and Professor at the University Hospital of La Timone, Marseille; Antonella Cardone, Director of the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC); and Ivana Cattaneo, Executive Director Oncology Policy, Novartis Oncology.
