Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are a type of non-melanoma skin cancer with a low rate of metastasis. Factors such as the size, depth and location of a BCC can increase the risk of metastasis and when metastasis does occur, prognosis is poor. Superficial BCCs can share many characteristics with non-malignant skin conditions such as plaque psoriasis and therefore can be mistakenly diagnosed as such.
