In November 1999, lawyers in England and Wales were shocked to receive a directive from the Master of the Rolls, one of the most senior law offcers in the land, that they were to use plain English, and to abandon the obscure and arcane vocabulary, including a large amount of Latin, which had been their stock in trade for many centuries.
