Fifty years on

I have recently passed the milestone of having been working as a doctor for half a century. The changes that have occurred over that time have been quite extraordinary. There have been new diseases such as HIV, COVID-19 and Ebola. There have been extraordinarily effective new treatments that have transformed the management of melanoma, psoriasis, peptic ulceration and much more. Our understanding of genetics, immunology, new techniques of imaging and minimally invasive surgery could hardly have been anticipated when I was a student.
